Office XP to Office 2000

I have some users at work that have office XP at home.
They'll occasionally bring work home with them to do, but
then can not open up the word documents back up at work
using Office 2000.

Are there any patches/converters around for download for
either Office XP or 2000? My searching didn't yield
anything.

I'm surprised by this-- the binaries are supposedly 100% compatible between
XP and 2000. In fact, I've been round-tripping Word documents between 2000,
XP and 2003 with no problems. What error message are your users getting?
