I have a Dell 8100 with Windows ME on it and Office XP Pro----I had the same
problem and found the fix at a Dell Forum. The fix was:
THE "FIX"
I just got off the phone with Microsoft to fix these same problems
described above.
They had me first delete all keys called "patches". Regedit procedure
was to make a backup copy of the registry then use Find "Keys" (Values
and Data deselected), "Match whole string only" for "Patches". I
deleted each instance (I think there were three).
I then was able to go into the Office Update site and it would
recognize the need for 5 patches. It downloaded them and installed but
the installation failed. The MS tech said "that was normal because I
already had those patches installed." I reran Office Update and it
said I still needed those five patches.
The MS tech said just ignore those five patches and I would have to
live with it.
I then went into Add/Remove and was able now to remove MS Office
completely.
I reinstalled from the CD successfully and was able to load SP1, SP2
and then the five troublesome patches successfully.
THANK BILL BARRETT FOR THE FIX
The fix worked like a charm for me----the only difference I had was that I
had found 4 patch keys to delete since I had Office XP Pro. I then followed
the rest of the above instructions with the exception of : I uninstalled
Office Pro, Office Media, and Office Publisher and then reinstalled all --
not sure if I needed to uninstall all -- but did so since I deleted 4 Patch
Keys -- wanted to be sure all was fixed. I also did not redownload the 2
troublesome Updates as I didnot want to repeat the problem. I decided to
let Microsoft have some time to fix them before I tried to download the
Security Patch KB822036 and the Word Perfect converter patch KB824938. (Not
sure which one of them caused the original problem).
If you do not know how to make a copy of your register or use the regedit
program go to the MS Knowledge base and read the Knowledge Base Articles
256419 and 322754 (these are for Windows 95,98,&ME) Windows XP and 2000 and
NT 4.0 need different articles -- but the links are on the above articles
for the ME.
Good luck all!!!!
