Office XP update search locks up at 30%

I am trying to use the Office "search for updates"
feature. When I hit the "check for updates" button it
locks up at 30% complete. I am running Windows 2000 and
have the Office SP2 installed. The normal "Windows" check
for updates feature works but the "Office" check for
updates locks up every time. Thanks!

I am having the same problem with office XP Pro on a Win
XP Pro System. I also have SP2 of Office XP Pro
installed. Did you find an answer? I get as far as 53% on
mine.

I am having the same problem -- XP Home, Office XP 2002.
XP OS updates run fine, but the Office update locks up.
I followed the error messages and got some
incomprehensible babble about .msi packages not
available. Did you have any luck? I'm running on a Dell
Inspiron, but my wife's Compaq has the same problem, with
the same software setup. I'm guessing one of the XP
updates did something that won't let the Office updates
through, but I have no idea what.

THE "FIX"

I just got off the phone with Microsoft to fix these same
problems
described above.

They had me first delete all keys called "patches".
Regedit procedure
was to make a backup copy of the registry then use
Find "Keys" (Values
and Data deselected), "Match whole string only"
for "Patches". I
deleted each instance (I think there were three).

I then was able to go into the Office Update site and it
would
recognize the need for 5 patches. It downloaded them and
installed but
the installation failed. The MS tech said "that was
normal because I
already had those patches installed." I reran Office
Update and it
said I still needed those five patches.

The MS tech said just ignore those five patches and I
would have to
live with it.

I then went into Add/Remove and was able now to remove MS
Office
completely.

I reinstalled from the CD successfully and was able to
load SP1, SP2
and then the five troublesome patches successfully.

THANK BILL BARRETT FOR THE FIX
