Office XP with older MS products

V

vs

I am about to install Office XP Standard for Students and
Teachers on my Windows ME computer (I have a 7th grader
who needs MS Word). I am concerned about whether or not
some of my other MS products, e.g. Project 98, will still
work after I install the new Office XP.
Question 1: Do I need to uninstall Word 6.0 and other 10-
year old Office software before I install Office XP?
Would this make the installation run more smoothly and/or
reduce interference with other programs?
Question 2: Am I likely to have any trouble with my
other, older, MS products?
Question 3: Will I need to reinstall Project 98 and other
products that now require activation (but didn't require
activation when they came out)?

In reverse order.

Products that did not require activation still do not require activation.

To be able to use your older Microsoft products (besides word and project,
you did not list what they are so this may or may not apply), you should
select a custom installation and create a specific folder for Office XP
(although I seem to recall that it will do this on its own) and opt to keep
previous versions.

Office XP will only update the programs that it contains if you let it. In
other words, since Office XP does not contain Project, your Project 98
program will not be updated.

One thing you might want to consider is that Office for Students and
Teachers can only be used on one computer. If this is for your son who will
be using it for the foreseeable future, you may want to consider installing
it on his computer if he has one.
