Office XP won't uninstall

Markus

I run Office XP under Windows XP.
I want to upgrade to office 2003, so I thought I'd start
by uninstalling Office XP.
Using the Add/remove I start removing it and after a
while I get the error message:
"Installer terminated prematurely" and then I get a new
error message stating. "The I/O operation has been
because of either a thread exit or an application
request" Read an MS-article recommending me to defrag my
disk, which I've done, to no use.
I then tried to repair the existing installation, but it
terminates in the exact same way.
As I have worked quite a lot on this problem I've come to
the point where I could settle for removing office XP
by "brute force". I know that there is a tool for that
from MS, but it is not recommended for use on XP. What do
I do? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

PS. I've tried starting the 2003 installation, hoping for
it to be able to upgrade the install, with no luck. DS.
