Office XP word Help

arrowsI have many word docs saved and for some reason when I now open I have
weird whachamacallits all over page I have no clue what they are nor how
undoubtedly settings got changed please advise how to correct example:
something that reminds me of a musical note then a bunch of arrows facing to
the right. then when I close document it asks if want to save changes .click
no and close then the shortcut to particular doc on desktop is then
gone.

a sincere thank you to Terry. I have been using Office 2000 xp and 2003 for
4+ years and never before had these things appeared. your link helped explain
some things.
