Office XP word

I'm running Windows 2000 MS officexp. attempting to open a
document, I get an error message -
my System will freeze.if I do CTRL ALE DEL it looks like I
run out of memory. at this point the only option I have is
to reboot the system. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
