Office xp2002 - defrag hangs

After installing Office XP2002 I tried to defrag my laptop
but system defrag hangs and crashes laptop. Any solutions.
I am running Windows 98.

Are you running any antivirus programs, screensavers, or other background
services while running defrag? They should be temporarily disabled. In
addition, run Checkdisk first.

Try running defrag from "safe mode".
