Office2000 Installer Problem

It appears the install program on my Office2000 Disk1 isn't working. I
noticed it first when trying to install a plugin for AVG Virus scanning
software which is continuing to ask for my disk to install a plugin whenever
I run Outlook. When I went to run the Setup program on Disk1 I get the
following error message:

WINDOWS INSTALLER - "This patch package could not be opened. Verify if the
patch package exists and that you have access to it, or contact the
application vendor to verify if this is a valid Windows Installer patch
package."

Also all my icons for Office2000 programs and files have dissapeared and are
replaced with a generic program icon so I can't tell what program is what or
even what file was created by which program (ie both Excel or Word files
have the same generic file icon). I have got some of the program icons back
by creating new icons and pointing them to the correct directory but I can't
do that for hundreds of files.

I would uninstall Office 2000, reboot and then reinstall. If you have
Microsoft RegClean, I would run this after the uninstall.

Control Panel, I get the same error message, previously mentioned. Anybody
know how to unistall Office2000 any another way without having use of the
disk or using the above method?.

You may be experiencing the problem where MSIEXEC starts for the wrong
product? When you start Outlook, an Installer pop-up starts in the
middle of the screen and then asks you for a disk, is that right? If you
are able to see the title bar of the Installer pop-up it will tell you
the product it's trying to "repair" and then usually the first step to
fixing it all is to get rid of this other product first.

Then uninstall the whole of Office and then re-install it. Test your
Office CD on a different machine first to ensure there's nothing wrong
with it.
