Office97 install on WinXP machine?

P

pjb9

Can I run Office97 on a Windows XP SP2 machine? The installation fails near
the end and gives an error message "Htmlmarq.ocx was unable to register
itself in the system registry."

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, pjb9. Two options to choose from:
1. Uninstall Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. Install Office 97 and related
service packs. Reinstall Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.
2. If you don't plan to use Office 97 to create web pages, you can do a
custom installation of Office 97 in which you deselect Web Page Authoring
(HTML) in the setup options. IMHO, Word 97 is a lousy html editor anyway, so
you're not really losing anything by doing this. And if you choose this
option, you don't have to do anything about WinXP SP2.

May I jump on this thread please?

I had the same problem with the html.ocx and note the comments, I
installed XP from a CD with SP2 slip streamed so I can't un-install
SP2. Anyway I can live with that, I'll use something else for HTML.

I have two further problems:

When I close Word 97 I get an error message that 'the Visual Basic
environment could not be initialised' and suggesting I re-install.

I cannot install Office 97 SP2, it says it couldn't find Office or I
have multiple installs of Office.

Any thought on these two please?

Hi, Jeff.

Regarding the Visual Basic Environment error message, see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=162053 "OFF97: Errors Starting Visual
Basic Editor". Since this error occurs when you close Word 97, my first
suspicion would be a damaged normal.dot template.

Regarding the Office 97 Service Release 2 installation problem, here are
two ideas:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=193565 "OFF97: SR-2 Patch Can't
Update Admin Install Without Bookshelf".
2. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194581 "OFF97: Error Message:
SR-2 Patch Cannot Be Applied to Your Computer".
