Office97 template on Windows98SE Shouldn't upgrade OS to download

T

Terry Gustafson

This is an Office97 template that runs on Windows98SE! I shouldn't have to
upgrade my OS on this computer just to download a template for a version of
office older than my OS. I do have computers with Windows2000 and WindowsXP
Pro but that's not where I am using Office97. If you post templates for use
in Office97, you should allow downloads and not aggravate your peers and
future customers.

Hi Terry,

Unfortunately, the ActiveX control that is used for the template downloads does require Windows 2000 or higher.
http://office.microsoft.com/assista...3&ShowHeader=true&CTT=3&Origin=ES790000301033
but you should have an option to manually download the file in that case if you've set other options as listed on the above page.

While they are still usable both Office 97 or Windows 98 are beyond their support timeframe in their lifecycle
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle.

The 'minimal' file version required is mainly referring to the oldest version of the app that can understand the file format and/or
use the features of that template as they are shown.

As you mention having other computers with a different OS what I've done in the past is to download from one of those then email the
templates to the 'other' computer.

Bob,
Thanks for the informative replyon ActiveX. I figured out what had happened
after I allowed the install of ActiveX. I am not new to MS. I have been
using, buying, selling and promoting MS since MSDOS 4.+ . I ran the eXtreme
shows for MS in NJ.

I just went to another computerwith WinXP Pro told it - NO! to install
ActiveX and it gave me a download button at the bottom of the page that
worked. This worked for the Word and PowerPoint but no option on the
Publisher templates.

Thanks again,
Terry

Hi Terry,

Interesting. Do you have URLs for a Word template where you could download and one for a Publisher template where you didn't have
that option?

What version of Publisher are you using?
