5yrs ago we purchased Office Xp we would like to install it on our new laptop
which has Vista 64 installed. The Xp computer is no longer used. Would
anybody know if this version of Office will run on a Vista 64 laptop.
Additionally within the Office XP package there is a statement which says
"This product is licensed as a single product. Its component parts may not
be separated for use on more than one computer".???

If the product packaging or CD states that it is for sale only with a new
computer it would be an OEM version and can not "legally" be transferred to
any computer other than the one it was first installed onto. Another place
to look is the license key sticker on the back of the CD case. If it says
OEM or MLK it is an OEM version and can't be transferred. If it says FPP or
fails to say that it can only be sold with a new computer then it is
probably retail (but I don't think that XP SBE was ever sold as retail but I
am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, and I welcome the correction)
and could be installed onto the new computer.

As for the operation of the program on Vista. XP is not supported in any
way on Vista and there is a known issue with Outlook but otherwise I have
heard that it will run without problems if you can get it installed and
updated successfully. Ensure that any trial version of Office and any
activation assistant is uninstalled and the computer rebooted prior to
attempting to install any retail version of Office.

All that means is that you can't install Excel (say) on one machine and Word
on another, both being installed from the same CD....

Sure, if I may ask why it's relevant.

Because surely if you go to buy an Office suite you buy the latest one, not
the one before, especially when the latest one has been out for at least six
months..... Which would mean that there was no problem running it on Vista
and the OP would not have needed to post the question in the first place..

Surely not.

It's quite obvious that that's not what the OP has done, else they wouldn't be
asking about Office XP.

They're here for answers to a problem with the version of Office they have.
What MIGHT also have been available for purchase at the time is irrelevant.

Now if you're simply looking for an excuse to scold them over something that's
none of your business, then perhaps the question is relevant.
