OfficeXP Update detection tool doesn't work

When I look for updates the Office Update Detection tool only gets about 40%
of the way finished and fails. How do I fix this?

My computer does exactly same thing at 40%. I wonder if we downloaded and
installed the latest detection tool and it doesn't work, because my office
update used to work just fine. I have sent a lot of error reports to
micorsoft and asked for help. I bet if you got the right person they could
fix it in 5 minutes.

I have the same problem. I can't update office 2003, I can't "detect and
repair", I can't uninstall. I keep getting this error: msiexec.exe has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I tried everything in that knowledge base and I am still having that problem

Hot a Dog!! I finally got the bugger fixed. The bugger being the inability
to get beyond 40% in the Office XP scan for updates. One of the suggestions
I received here on the newsgroup (sorry to say I do not recall the source)
was to open each program contained in the Office family, click on help,
click on "detect and repair". I started from the top (Access) and when I
finished with Publisher the Office scan works!!
