OffXP SP1/SP2 1328 errors - try this...

Eric [MSFT]

Hi all,

If you're receiving 1328 error messages when installing
an Office update, it generally means that versions of
files on the machine where updated beyond a "baseline"
level that the patch was meant to update. For
OffXP, "baseline" file versions are RTM, SP1, and SP2.

If your machine was at one of these baselines, and you
install a post-baseline update, you will been to use
the "full file" version of service packs, instead of
the "binary" versions.

Installing "full file" updates requires that your machine
be running Installer 2.0. To determine your Installer
version, go to Start/Run and type "msiexec.exe" without
quotes. The Installer version number will be listed in
the "Incorrect command line parameters" dialog which will
appear.

Installer 2.0 can be obtained from a link in KB article
292539 (INFO: MSI: How to Obtain the Windows Installer
Engine - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;292539)

The "full file" version of the OffXP SP1 update
(MAINSP1_Admin.msp) is included in the Oxpsp1a.exe file,
which can be found in the Office Resource Kit
topic, "Office XP Update: Service Pack 1" -
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/journ/Oxpsp1.htm)

Once you've downloaded the Oxpsp1a.exe file (~39MB), open
it to extract the contents to a temp folder, the double
click the MAINSP1_Admin.msp file to install the patch.

If you're interested in finding more about Installer
updates and patching methods, see the white paper in KB
article 330043 (OFFXP: "Microsoft Office XP Patch
Deployment" White Paper -

Thanks!

Hi Eric,

I have the same problem like Richard, but on XP. Tried
your solution, but get another error - "This file can
only be used to upgrade admin images. Please refer to
the documentation about how to apply this patch to an
admin image"

Any ideas?

Michal

I am trying to install Office XP SP1 on a machine running
Windows 2000 and get the following error "Error 1328 Error
applying patch to c:config.mis/pt176.tmp It probably has
been updated by other means and can no longerr be modified
by this patch" The error log is useless and I get same
error after reinstalling Office. Any ideas?
