Dear Allen,

Thank you for your posting.

Based on the description, the issue may be related to the corrupt IE
caches. Let us clean up IE caches first to narrow down the issue:

1. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools -> Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, click Clear History to delete the history records.
3. Click the Delete Files button in the Temporary Internet Files section.
4. Check the item "delete all offline content" and then click OK.
5. Click on the Settings button in the Temporary Internet Files section.
6. Click on the View Files Button.
7. Click View Files and delete all the files in the open window.
8. Click View Objects and delete all the files in the open window.
9. Close these windows.
10. Restart the computer.

Is the issue resolved now?

In addition, what is your operating system? If it is Windows XP, you can
disable all the Startup Group items to check the issue as follows:

1. Click Start, click Run, and type "msconfig" (without the quotation
marks) into the Open box, click OK.
2. On the General tab, select Selective startup.
3. Deselect the following check box:
Load Startup Items
4. Click Apply, click OK and click Yes to restart the computer.

Does the issue disappear now? Can you update Office Updates properly now?

Hope the information is helpful.

Thanks and have a good day!

I followed all your instructions, then attempted to update
again and received Error: 1328 for SP-1 (inferring that it
had been 'installed by some other method so this patch
couyld not override files' (paraphrased), and when
attempting to update to SP-2 that it found an unexpected
version installed.

What do you suggest?
Thanks

Dear Fred,

Thank you for your reply.

This error message may occur if both the following conditions are true:

- You originally installed an unreleased version of Office XP.
- You downloaded and installed the Office XP SP-1 update.

To resolve this problem and install SP-1, you must purchase a retail
edition of Microsoft Office XP (which displays an Office hologram). Only a
retail version of Office XP can be updated. Beta or unreleased versions
cannot be updated to SP-1.

For the detailed information about this error, please read the following
article:

315152 OFFXP: Error 1328 When You Apply Office XP Service Pack 1

Hope it clears your concerns.

Thanks and have a good day!

Tommy Campbell - [MSFT]*

Hi Benny,

Thanks for letting us know that this issue is not resolved or the root
cause of the issue has yet to be determined.

What version of Office are you using? Open Word and then click on Help and
About and report back the version number. It will look something like
11.5207.5207. This will help us in determining the possible causes for this
issue.

We are looking forward to your response.

Have a great day!
