Web update fails with "Office Update is unable to check for updates Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance. " Full
file update just refuses to install.

Any help appreciated

Philip--you need your original installation CD or the installation path if
you're on a network. If you have the CD, put it in your main CD/DVD drive
and try again. I hope this works!

I knew that but that is not the problem.

Getting Office SP2 update to install for me followed lots of attempts - but
the one that worked was a solution not suggested anywhere.
Put your MS Office CD in your drive and Run - Setup. You will see 3 x
options. Select "Repair".
This will Restore and/or Repair all office programmes - without deleting
either your settings or your existing emails - unlike a complete re-install!
After this (I re-booted but that may not be strictly necessary). I then went
to Update and Hey Presto - everything worked fine.
I have used a Registry First Aid Programme plus a Registry Compressor and
either of these MAY have affected the registry - this factor was in the MS
advice data and I amended the registry accordingly without success prior to
the solution outlined.

The solution was to follow this proceedure sent to me:

1. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility on your desktop and then
double click to install it.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. After you install the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility, click Start
menu then All Programs and then Windows Install Clean Up.
3. Highlight Microsoft All Office Entries in the list and then click Remove.
Please don't remove any other entries in the list.
4. Click OK and wait for the process to end.
5. Click Exit to close the Windows Installer Cleanup utility.
6. Restart your computer and then install a full version of Office you want.

Then, go to Office Product Updates Web site to check for all available
updates:
