oh man this can't be that DIFFICULT -alert notification vanished

I am running xp and outlook 2003 with the latest updates-patches....
and oddly enought ... about a week ago my ALERT-NOTIFICATION popup
window disappeared... eventhough the configuration is set to be
on.?????????? WHAT COULD BE GOING ON HERE???? please help.
