Hi - I've made some progress today, which appears to
eliminate some problems I thought might be issues -
1. BT has sent me two faxes which I have received into my
InBox and which I can open and read. BT confirmed the
line (analogue line on my BT Digital USB Home Highway)
connected to my analogue modem as opposed to the BT
provided software based USB Fax Modem) is receiving data.
2. Immediately afterwards I asked three offices,
Peterborough, Leicester and March (Cambs) to fax me.
3. This was the result. Symantec WinFax SE loaded
(automatically), communicated, received and, as usual, I
can see "Fax Received" at the top of my preview for InBox
for probably a second, get "the beep" of my new "mail" and
then the Fax Received completely drops out and vanishes
into thin air!
Re disabling NIS and NAV, I had already tried this before
my original post - no impact. I wasn't surprised by
comments about Norton - often wonder why I ever installed
any of their stuff - so disabling was one of my first
courses of action.
I know this may sound absolutely stupid but does OL Rules,
where I have Junk Senders/Adult Senders permanently delete
incoming e-mail also work on faxes? I was wondering if OL
was treating the incoming faxes, from the three locations
I am obviously having communication problems with, (which
may not have a header, details of sender, etc.,) as Junk e-
mail? I'm just completely perplexed now I have actually
been able to receive a fax from another source.
I suppose I have to look at incompatibility but the three
fax machines at their locations are (1) brand new BT fax
and Samsung (2) Samsung and (3) HP. They're sending
successfully to everyone inside/outside of the group OK so
why not to me? Scream!
By the way Ross, although the machine I'm dealing with now
is W98 SE, I have also tried from my Armada (WinNT4) using
my USR 3Com external 56 kbps Fax Modem and alternatively
with Global PC card modem. Same problems.
Now I've received a fax via BT on their line checking,
it's just got to be a problem at the offices I'm trying to
deal with - hasn't it?
I think what I must do now is physically look at the
configuration of one hardware modem at one of the
locations. Do you think?
Many thanks for keeping this flow going! If I find out
that it is just a compatibility problem, I just won't be
able to believe it. I will come back to newsgroup later
anyway to see what you think about the "stupid" statement
re e-mail.

Me, harsh? No way. Try the Windows XP print_fax group
if
you want to see
some harsh responders. They scare me.
I don't see many clues here. Those settings look fine
and
seem to indicate
that your analog modem was detected and configured correctly. You lost me on
that "BT Home Highway Digital USB Box" bit. I have no idea what that is, but
presumably it allows a pass through of a standard
analog
phone line.
My money would be on the Norton Internet Security. It's been notorious for
causing problems with other TAPI based fax software
(like
Windows XP Fax).
And if you could once receive faxes with WinFax SE but now cannot, it's the
most likely culprit. Have you tried disabling it when
you
receive a fax?
What OS are you running?

Oh dear - without offence meant, I was dreading Russ
responding. Because he can be so harsh with "us
amateurs" - especially when we're stupid and don't give
enough info. Anyway, Russ thank you for responding.
My Properties say:
General Tab:
ommunications Port - Initialise at 19,200 bps.
Fax/Modem Type: Class 1 (default set up after using
olfsetup.exe) although I can select Class 2.
Fax Tab:
My modem is connected to a regular telephone line (versus
a cellular).
Transmission speed: Maximum - As fast as possible.
Minimum: Send at any rate. (N.B. 19200 is not an option
under either of these headings).
Initialisation string sequence:
1. Initialisation String Sequence:
AT&F&D2&C1&H1&R2&I0S7=55.
2.ATS36=0.
Flow AT&H1&R2&I0.
Use Hardware Flow: Checked.
Reset: ATZ.
Options Tab:
ECM for sending is checked.
ECM for receiving is checked.
High speed compression (2D) is checked.
I hope this gives you a clue as to where I'm going wrong.
As I said, no problems sending - just cannot see any new
faxes received. By the way, I installed the Symantec
update for the viewer which works fine when I try open
faxes I have previously received.

original message. Perhaps I should have said so!
I'm beginning to wonder whether my problems relate to my
actual BT line. I have BT Home Highway where I am not
using the BT USB Fax Modem provided (digital) because
I've
been led to believe that fax in OL2000 will only work
with
an analogue line - so I have my USRB 56kbps Fax Modem
(Class 0,1,2) attached to an an ordinary serial
comm
on
my
PC and the phone is connected to one of the analogue
holes
on my BT Home Highway Digital USB Box. The
mystery
of
the
whole thing to me is that I am communicating with and
without file attachments via my current connection but
any
fax that is sent to me seems to "drop out" of my Inbox
after the phone has rung, the Symantec WinFax launches,
communicates, and receives. If it's not the telephone
line (unable to receive data), then I wonder if it is
something on my PC "blocking" the incoming
communication.
I have Norton Internet Security and wonder if something
there has been configured (not by me, I hasten to add
as I
really don't understand the darned program!) to stop
incoming communications on a certain port.
This is a real pain - I've always been able to receive
faxes and it's only been the last few months that
I
just
can't get them.
