OL 2003 junk email filter not applied

i have previously been able to filter junk email using
the parameters in filters.txt, located in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033. I have
tools|organize|junk e-mail enabled for junk and adult
content.

After installing mcafee virusscan this feature seemed to
be disabled and emails are no longer filtered according
to the parameters in the filters.txt file. The filter
file seems to be intact.

mcafee is clueless and directs me to microsoft.

any suggestions?
