ol 2003 mail will stay unread

I recently upgraded my office to 2003...I use an exchange account as well as
POP3...when ever the send/receive is initiated all of the "read mail" will
revert back to unread. It even duplicated a few of the emails (but that
hasn't happened more than twice...maybe a fluke). Any ideas?
