OL 2003 update broke my machine

O

OutlookProblem

It's hard to generate a Subject that will get attention ;)

SITUATION:
I have an eMachines that came with XP Home Edition V5.1 (Build
2600.xpdp2.0.30422-1633:SP1). I loaded OL2003 Student for my daughter in
school.

WHAT I DID:
I downloaded the newest spam patch for OL 2003 from microsoft and installed
it directly (no saving). I had nothing running, including OL.

THE PROBLEM:
Now, every time a new message comes in, I get a notification box that says
"Preparing for Windows Installer" or something like that. It comes on and
goes off quickly, so I don't have a chance to read it.

I did a system restore to yesterday, and that didn't help. I did 2 more
restores; back a week, and back a month. Same thing. I get this annoying
warning that pops and goes away. Everything is working, but this is really a
nuisance.

Any way to fix this?

Thank you very much.

Thanks for the response.

It just tried the "Detect and Repair" and received this Windows Installer
message:

"This patch package could not me opened. Verify that the patch package
exixtes and that you can accesss it or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows INstaller patch package."

In addition to that, I tried to re-install OL2003, and it won't let me. I
get the same error. I have an original Microsoft CD.

Any other ideas?

You receive the "This patch package could not be opened" errror message in
Office 2003, in Office XP, or in Office 2000

You are very welcome - glad it worked for you.

Happy holidays - my "minders" at Microsoft have their own methods for
