I'm finding OL2002's search capability a bit quirky to say the least
I'm searching IMAP folders. I can't get searches on headers suc
as "From" to behave in the way I reckon they should
Can anyone explain the following, seen when using "Advanced Find"
Assume I have mails from "JOHN SMITH [[email protected]]
1. Using the "Messages" tab
a. A search with "JOHN SMITH" in the "From..." box finds the mai
b. A search with "foo.com" in the "From..." box also find the mail
*but only* if the whole email has been downloaded from the IMA
serve
2. Using the "Advanced" tab (stuff in the other tabs is cleared)
a. A search for "'From' contains 'JOHN SMITH'" finds the mail
b. A search for "'From' contains 'foo.com'" fails to find the mail
even if the body has been downloade
Also, I have a few mails from the same person, same email address
but where instead of a name of "JOHN SMITH" they've used "JSMITH", i.e.
"JSMITH [[email protected]]
Given that I may remember that single email address ([email protected]
and not remember the various names used (JSMITH, "JOHN SMITH", whatever)
it seems that the only way I can reliably find all the emails fro
my friend Mr. Smith is to do a "Messages" tab search, using his actual emai
first ensuring - and this is the annoying bit - that all of the message bodies have
been downloaded from the IMAP server
Surely not
One more thing. When looking at messages in the header listing, th
"From" field contains only the name ("JOHN SMITH" or "JSMITH") i
my example. However, double-clicking on the header to open the mai
in a new window shows a "From" field with the full name-plus-email
e.g. "JOHN SMITH [[email protected]]" in the above. Clearly som
of the search attempts are able to look into the full name-plus-email
but some can't. And some others can, but only if the rest of th
mail is downloaded
Delving into the actual mail source I see, as expected, that the
real email "From" header contains
"JOHN SMITH" <[email protected]
Why is Outlook messing about like this? Every other mailer on the plane
seems to know that the "From" field is the "From" field, and searche
on an already-downloaded "From" field don't require the downloadin
of the rest of the message in order to succeed
Sigh
