OL2003 - Change in the way 'lookup' or autocompletion works?

I have a contact that I email regularly. The Full Name is "Catherine
'Kitty' Maness. First name: Catherine, middle name : 'Kitty', last
name, Maness. File As is "Catherine 'Kitty" Maness.

In OL2000, I could type "kitty" in the addressing field and it would
look her up, no problem. Now, since upgrading to OL2003, it can't find
her record.

Is there a setting to change or did Microsoft withdraw a feature?

Autocompletion was added to autoresolution starting with Outlook 2002. Both
features store their data in the same file. That file is now an NK2 file
instead of the older NICK file. So things do work differently, but you
should still have the same functionality.
A lot of times people get confused when they upgrade because it is not
always clear whether they are using autocompletion or autoresolution. Which
are you using? Have you checked to make sure the sort order of the Outlook
Address Book is by the File As field?

I am not sure I am familiar with the terminology and or features that
you are referring to.

By Autoresolution are you referring to the Tools - Options - Email
Options - Advanced - When Sending a Message; "Automatic Name Checking"
setting?
By Autocompletion are you referring to Tools - Options - Email Options -
Advanced - When Sending a Message; "Suggest names while completing To,
Cc and Bcc fields"?
My settings are checked for both.

As to the OAB sort order, I did set it to "File As" and restarted OL,
but no change in behavior.

Reminder: " 'Kitty' ", with the single quotes, is the Middle Name and
the Nickname for this record.

Further attempts to research this;
1. Put " 'kitty' " and "kitty" in TO: field, this is with and without
the single quote characters, no results. Hit "Check Names" button, hit
"Show more Names", hit "Advanced", hit "Find", entered "kitty". Result
= "No entries found."
2. Tried looking up my own record which is First: Don, Middle: 'Bear',
Last: Wilkinson, Nickname: Bear. It works great, pulling up my record
as soon as I type the 'b' and the 'e', which are as far as it needed to
go to get to a unique record, apparently.
3. Thinking this might be a problem with the single 'kitty' record, I
created a new record - John 'test' Doe - (e-mail address removed).
Attempts to look him up fail, in the same manner as lookups for "
'kitty' ".

*sigh*

I am wondering if there isn't some sort of quirk with how the
name/aliases/nicknames/file as/etc. field data is stored if a record
that was in the Contacts since, say Outlook 97, through OL2000 and now
into OL2003 has more 'pointers', and is therefore 'find-able', but ones
created more recently, in OL2000 or OL2003 don't have as many references
and therefore fail.

NOTE: When I first created John 'Test' Doe, as I went to enter the
email address I started to type the word 'test' intending to type an
account I use for testing. As soon as I typed part of the address, some
sort of autocompletion or other feature supplied an email address that
does not exist in any Contact record I am aware or can find but which I
do know I manually typed for an outgoing email message since upgrading
to OL2003. I gather this is some sort of 'caching' of recently used
emails? I can see it as a useful feature but I wonder if it isn't
contributing to my problem.....

Thanks for your time,
Don (aka Bear)

There have definitely been some quirks to how autoresolution (Automatic Name
Checking or "Check Names"--after tabbing out of the To: field) works now
that the autocompletion feature (Suggest Names, --while you are still in the
To: field) was added to Outlook (and uses the same cache). They have not
been very reproducible and certainly haven't been clearly documented so far.

One of reasons this is hard to track down is that for most users the problem
simply goes away after they use autocompletion for a while. As messages are
sent, your autocompletion cache becomes populated and takes effect before
you even need to use autoresolution. Pretty soon, you won't even be using
autoresolution anymore.
