OL2003 no longer pops up reminder for flagged items

C

CJSnet

When I first installed Office 2003, I loved the new feature whereby setting
a flag for an e-mail or contact and adding a reminder would result in the
Reminders window popping up at the selected date/time, with a direct link to
the e-mail or contact.

However, these seems to have stopped functioning for me and I don't know
why. All that happens now at the selected date/time is the e-mail or
contact goes red. Perhaps it is embarrassed that the feature is not working
properly any more.

Can someone please advise how to fix this, as I missed an important reminder
that I was relying on already.

Are the flagged items in the default folders (Inbox, Calendar, Contacts,
Tasks) or in subfolders? Reminders only fire from those four default
folders...

They are indeed in subfolders.

Why on earth doesn't it work from all folders? There's no warning or
explanation given for this.

Is there a way to make them work from other folders?

I don't know why it doesn't work from subfolders; that's just the way it was
designed. Usually if you try to set a reminder on an item in a subfolder
you will get a warning dialog that says the reminder won't fire because the
item is not in the default folder, but I guess it doesn't do this when you
set the reminder on a flag instead of on the item itself.

www.slovaktech.com offers two 3rd party addins that will get reminders to
work from subfolders...take a look and see which one is right for you.

The reminders mechanism was designed to only work from a limited set of
folders due to possible performance problems mainly with Exchange server.
Working in online mode the Reminders folder is a MAPI search folder that has
MAPI Restrictions on it and those restrictions are maintained by the server
for the mailbox for a usual period of 8 days after each use. If more folders
were permitted to be placed in the Reminders folder restriction that would
increase the server load. So the restriction is maintained even now.

That warning dialog is hard coded into Outlook but it only appears for
calendar and task items, not for flags with reminders for email and/or
contact items.

Hmm, do you know of any alternatives? Unfortunately that program completely
takes over reminder management and replaces the default Outlook reminders
window with its own unsightlier version :(

Did you look at Extended Reminders as well as Reminder Manager? I don't
know of any alternatives to those two programs offhand, but there's always
Google to help you search :)
