-> [OL2007]: Will they fix the blue line of death someday? <-

S

Steve JORDI

HI,

is there anybody close to Microsoft out there knowing whether
they will consider someday fixing the devil blue line problem?

When replying to an HTML formatted message, no way to break the
vertical blue line to insert your comments so the reader knows
where you replied.

Just like in any earlier version of Outlook (including 2003) and
in all sharewares as well as freewares?

No way either to switch to plain text and have those paragraphs
automatically prefixed with ">"

Millions of outlook users and nobody complains about that?

There is no way to contact Microsoft to submit bugs and/or suggestions
so if you work for Microsoft, or know someone who does, PLEASE ASK
THEM.

Sincerely,
Steve JORDI

If you claim to be able to toggle the blue line for sections of your reply in
ANY version of Outlook, please post instructions. My testing indicates it's
not possible in versions prior to Outlook 2007 either.

Not as far as I can tell

In the last five years, I've seen it mentioned in this newsgroup maybe four
times.

Steve,

I just replied to an OL2007 message I received using Thunderbird and
replied inline to some comments. The vertical line "broke" and allow
the insertion. I then replied to that message from OL2007 and was also
able to insert comments inline.

Is that not what you are trying to do?

Yes on Outlook 2003, you can insert a few carriage returns after a
paragraph and click the paragraph unindent button. that will break the
blue line and then you can type in your text so people reading the
answer know where you typed in. Doesn't work on 2007.
In the last five years, I've seen it mentioned in this newsgroup maybe four
times.

Well, if you google this, you have more than five occurences of the
problem.

Click the Contact Us item in the Help menu.

Doesn't work. It's impossible to talk to someone at microsoft or to
wrtie to them.
The only time I tried, it was to submit a bug, not ask for assistance,
the persons didn't have a clue and didn't understand I didn't need
assistance. They kept telling me how to search in the help file for
what I wanted to do.

Sincerely,

Use "Include and Indent" instead, then you won't have that problem.

Mhhh... that's one way to at least answer to an email. Never saw this.
I will try this. If it's fine on the recipient side, I'll be happy
with it.

Thanks.

Really? Which option did you have in Outlook?
Tools->Options...->Preferences->Email Options
In the "When replying to a message", do you have "Prefix each line of
the original message?"
That's the one causing the problem.

Bob,

the problem with your solution is that it works only for HTML
formatted messages.
If you reply to a plain text message, it's not indented at all and not
even prefixed with ">".
So this solution won't work unless I change the settings for each
message just before replying... a hassle! :)

Steve JORDI

I can't access OL2007 using RDP at the moment, (we're moving servers),
but as soon as they're back up, I'll check for you.

FWIW, I have not made any changes to the default settings.

Wouldn't do it for me in Outlook 2003 either.

Then open a call. You always have 90 days of free support from the time of
first call when you install a new product.

I have "Include the original message text" selected.

Ok then, the text is included but not prefixed/indented. :-(

Thanks anyway

Well,

not surprisingly, Microsoft didn't fix that bug at all with
the recent SP2. That was too much hoping.

What a pity.
