OLAP Cube and Project 2007

I posted a week ago about some newbie questions regarding MS Office Project
2003, creating views, and extending the OLAP cube.

Now, my project manager informed me that we are going to be upgrading to
Project 2007. She said that she had heard that there was a new interface for
MS Project 2007 that made extending the OLAP cube easier. So, now they might
want to hold off on extending the OLAP cube until after we upgrade. Is this
true? Is extending the OLAP cube in Project 2007 much easier than in 2003?
Could someone provide more specifics on this or is there a link that someone
could give to an article or such that explains the differences?

Also, she said that we might want to take some classes on Project 2007
reporting and extending the OLAP cube. We're in the St. Louis area. Are
there any recommendations regarding these types of classes?

Thanks so much!

Hi Jonna,

The cube resources in Project Server 2007 are indeed dramatically improved over
the 2003 generation. For example, there are virtually no limitations on the
number of enterprise fields you can create and enterprise fields can easily be
added to a cube through the PWA admin interface.

One of the things that makes this work is the dramatically improved SQL
Analaysis services in SQL Server 2005. Keep in mind that if your organization
hasn't already deployed a SQL Server 2005 system, you will need to do this as
part of your update.

If you are already familiar with the 2003 deployment process, I would suggest
that you set up a pair of lab machines Project Server on one, SQL on the other)
and work with it a bit and then evaluate your training requirements.

Joanna,

There is no need to extend the cube in PS07, since the product offers
this functionality natively (e.g. through the admin GUI).

As far as training classes, I would recommend my company's Project
Server training classes -- you can find out more at
