OLAP Cube - Field Definitions

B

Brent99Admin

I'm working with a client to build their Portfolio Analyzer cube properly.
The cube was setup prior to my arrival and I'm running into a problem with
the data of the dimensions.

The cube builds successfully and all data that is expected to be available
is present, accurate, and useable. However, when I add fields to the view
that I have created there is a problem with some of the dimensions. When I
display the 'Field List' I can see all of the fields available and they can
be dropped into the view. However, many of the fields are showing with
'Level 01', 'Level 02', etc.. underneath the dimension. Then when I add the
field to the view it is displayed as 'Level 02' rather than 'Facility' or
'Functional Area' for instance.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem and 'How' I can fix the
problem. Is this as simple as making changes in the EGT to the Enterprise
Custom Fields and republishing, changing the cube dimension labels, or other.

What you are seeing is common behavior in Portfolio Analyzer views. You
simply need to change the title of the dimension after you drop it in the
PivotTable using the following steps:

1. Right-click on the gray header for the dimension in the PivotTable
2. Select "Commands and Options" from the shortcut menu
3. Click the Captions tab
4. Enter the correct name for the dimension in the Caption field
5. Close the Commands and Options dialog

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply Dale. This is what I thought might be the answer but I
really hate to assume. Could you respond and help me understand why I might
not have run into this in the past. I have been building cubes since Project
Central Server and I have never had to modify the Caption/Title of the
dimensions in the past.

Dale -

Just to fulfill your curiousity the answer is No. It is happening to a
majority but not all dimensions. Some of the dimensions such as project,
version, booking type, are OK. Other dimensions such as project facility,
project initiative, project functional area are displaying as follows:

Project Facility
Level 02

Project Initiative
Level 02
Level 03

This is not happening for fields like Resource or Resource Status, but it is
happening for the Resource RBS field.

Finally, I have not had a chance to go through all of the dimenions yet but
it appears that it is only occuring with the EOCs and not the other standard
fields (project, resource, etc).

Brent99Admin,

You have answered yourself - such behaviour is typicall for outline codes.
But note, that project and resource outline codes are the only ones of custom
- user defined - fields that you can use in project portfolio view. Project
"flat" custom fields (e.g. text fields) are note available there.
Level02, Level03, etc are default field names when you build OLAP cube for a
structured dimension. That's all.

Good luck,
Ela

If the dimension is a single-level outline code, you won't have the issue.
If it is multi-level outline code, consisting of two or more levels of
indenture in the outline code, then you will have the issue. This is the
behavior I have seen ever since the introduction of the Portfolio Analyzer
in Project Server 2002, so I'm not surprised at the behavior you see. Hope
this helps.

Hello Dale,

I have the same issue an found your reply to Brent99Admin. But I just
can't find the captions Tab. I right clicked where it says Level2 and
in the dropdown I selected Command and Options. I see a4 tabs (General,
Format, Border/Fill, Filter and Group). I know it sounds dumb but I
really lloked. What could I be doing wrong here?

Thanks in Advance

Regards,
-Dee

Hi Dee,
In the Specify Views page, as Dale explained, in the Pivo Table zone,
right-click the header of the column, select Commands and options, then you
will find the Caption tab...

Oh I see it now. I was clicking on the graph instead of the pivot
table. Thanks Gerard!!!
