OLAP Cube generation doesn't appear to finish.

Denis in Brisbane

If I initiate cube building from PWA, it shows the message that cube
processing was initiated but never changes to completed, even though I
suspect it has.

If I go to Analysis Manager and Process the database, it all appears to work.

When I look at the error log there is a consistent series of 7 errors and 2
warnings. I was going to try to summarise but it's going to be quicker and
more effective to dump the whole text in here. Sorry for the length. Any
solutions gratefully accepted.

This is not by any means a certain solution, but, have you verified that
there are no special characters (characters other than letters, numbers,
spaces, and underscores) in the project names, resource names, task names,
enterprise codes, and outline codes?

Reid,
Yes, the cube building used to work. I only get to the customer every
couple of weeks and I believe it was working last time I went.

I haven't verified no special characters but I'd be surprised. Although -
you didn't mention hyphens but I wouldn't expect them to be illegal?
We recently renamed projects and they do now have hyphens but I think the
cube problem pre-dated the rename.

I'm next there on Friday 13th so can check then.

processing was initiated but never changes to completed, even though I
suspect it has.

If I go to Analysis Manager and Process the database, it all appears to work.

When I look at the error log there is a consistent series of 7 errors and 2
warnings. I was going to try to summarise but it's going to be quicker and
more effective to dump the whole text in here. Sorry for the length. Any
solutions gratefully accepted.

Hyphens in project names are probably OK, especially if you have SP1
installed on the server and on all machines running PPro.

Resource names and Outline codes are more often a problem.

I think it's worth checking, but I suspect the cause in this case lies
elsewhere. Let's hope that other experts jump in with ideas. You might ask
your client if they have made any changes to network security settings or
procedures.

Denis:

IMO, Hyphens in project names are a problem no matter what service pack or
hotfix level you're out. You're likely to see other corruption symptoms
beyond the cube issue including publishing errors. What's going on in the
application event log on the server?

you didn't mention hyphens but I wouldn't expect them to be illegal?
We recently renamed projects and they do now have hyphens but I think the
cube problem pre-dated the rename.

I'm next there on Friday 13th so can check then.

processing was initiated but never changes to completed, even though I
suspect it has.

If I go to Analysis Manager and Process the database, it all appears to
work.

When I look at the error log there is a consistent series of 7 errors
and 2

Gary,
I've just created a new post about the use of hyphens because I think it's a
significant issue. Having done that, it occurred to me that I might offend
you. Definitely not my intention - I greatly value the advice you give and I
know your opinion is based on a lot of solid experience.

I haven't verified no special characters but I'd be surprised. Although -
you didn't mention hyphens but I wouldn't expect them to be illegal?
We recently renamed projects and they do now have hyphens but I think the
cube problem pre-dated the rename.

I'm next there on Friday 13th so can check then.

If I initiate cube building from PWA, it shows the message that cube
processing was initiated but never changes to completed, even though I
suspect it has.

If I go to Analysis Manager and Process the database, it all appears to
work.

When I look at the error log there is a consistent series of 7 errors
and 2
warnings. I was going to try to summarise but it's going to be quicker
and
more effective to dump the whole text in here. Sorry for the length.
Any
solutions gratefully accepted.

Went back on Friday and it's working the way it should be. Before I left
last week I killed a couple of scheduled procedures that I hadn't put in and
was suspicious about. Cube build has been running fine since the following
morning so I suspect that was it. It looked like somebody was trying to run
some scheduled processes to extract Project Server data.

I haven't changed any of the Project names (but I've taken the caution on
board).
