OLAP is the acronym for On-Line Analytical Processing and is a feature of
SQL 2005 Analysis Services. An OLAP cube is a multi-dimensional database
object that provides totals information about projects, resources, and
tasks. Project Server 2007 provides 14 OLAP cubes and you must configure
the system to define how and when it builds these OLAP cubes. Project
Server 2007 uses the data in these 14 OLAP cubes in Data Analysis views, all
of which must be created by the Project Server administrator. Data Analysis
views provide a powerful means for analyzing project, resource, and task
information from a high level, and are very useful for your company's
executives. For more information about OLAP cube building, refer to the
following link:

If you can wait a few more weeks, you can also purchase our new book on
Project Server 2007 for administrators at the following URL:

Hope this helps.

I cant wait for your book to come out. I just bought "Managing Enterprise
Projects" and it is very helpful. Any idea why it takes til October 07 to
publish a book on how to administer MS Project Server 2007? I would have
thought Microsoft would have put one out a long time ago...

History has shown that Microsoft simply DOES NOT write books about Project
Server. Our company wrote the ONLY book on Project Server 2002, wrote the
FIRST TWO books on Project Server 2003 (our only competitor came out with a
book 6 months later), and we have released the FIRST AND ONLY book on
Project Server 2007 so far, and are due to release the SECOND BOOK on
Project Server 2007 in less than a month. We are a small company, so I need
you to "cut us some slack" on how fast we can write these books. We have
now written THREE books on Microsoft Project 2007 and Project Server 2007 in
the past 16 months, totally almost 2,700 pages of content. That's pretty
good considering that basically two of us have written these three books,
isn't it? Beyond the writing, we have had to work client engagements to
"put food on the table." :)

Also, thanks for buying our first book on Project Server 2007. If you liked
the first book, you will love the administrator's book, as we believe it is
our best work ever. :)

Well, thanks a lot for the reply...

I wanted to know... are the 14 olap cubes built-in? What is the
purpose of having them? Is it to generate custom reports? What each of
the olap cube do? please explain me...
Thanks in advance

You are welcome for the help. Do know, however, that everyone in this group
is a volunteer. None of us work for Microsoft, so we're not paid to answer
questions in the depth that you request. Here's the overview of what you
need to know:

1. The 14 OLAP cubes are a default feature of Project Server 2007.
2. The Project Server administrator can create Data Analysis views from any
of these OLAP cubes.
3. Data Analysis views are high-level reports that are useful for
executives and anyone who has high-level oversight responsibilities for
projects and resources.

I will not describe the detail you want about each of the 14 OLAP cubes.
You should buy our book for that, as we explain each OLAP cube in detail,
and how to create specific types of Data Analysis views using each type of
OLAP cube. If you buy the book, you also get two Excel workbooks that help
you to use each OLAP cube. If anyone wants to take the time to give you
more details about each OLAP cube, I would welcome their input. Hope this
helps.
