Should I wish that Office 2007 does not loose those old familiar bugs that
have been there as far back as Word 5? Should I hold on to Office 2003 in
order to enjoy the regular outbursts of frustration followed by loud screams
involving the name of Bill Gates in an outherwise quiet office? Those shots
of adrenaline that wake up the urge in you to start a march across the
country all the way to Redmond?
I use Office 2003 regularly. I am writing a book and I am at page 180 or so.
I use headings to number my sections and I try not to go beyond Heading 3,
but occasionally hit Heading 4. When I do, one of those familiar bugs comes
out to play. Your headings are numbered today. Come tomorrow and you reload
the file, Heading 4 has no numbers. Try to change it, Heading 3, Heading 2
and Heading 1 loose their indentation. Its crazy, but its not new. And its
just one manifestation of the Heading bugs.
Numbering has haunted Word for many a version. The one thing I should be
amazed by is why that feature has never been fixed. Perhaps the Word
developers are just as cozy with these bugs as I have become?
If I need Word for simple letters, then I don't have to pay the price for
Office. If I need Word for long documents with at least three levels of
headings, then I expect it to deliver. It is a shame that we are still
talking about this in 2006.
