old templates with macros

We have templates with macros created in Word 2003, using them as is in Word
2007 works, but I would like to save the templates as .dotx templates. I
have not been successful, is there an easy way to accomplish this and
preserve all the macros?

You need you save them as *.dotm instead. The 'm' indicates they are
macro-enabled as opposed to macro-free which is denoted by the 'x' in the
extension.
