old to new

having problems with my one apple client and want to get opinions here on
something.

they have old emacs running os9 and using outlook express for email. the
new machines will have panther with Office and they want to use Entourage.
I've been researching for a couple of days about moving email and contacts
between and realize what a clusterbomb it is.

Funny thing was, had one newer emac that was still running os9 (back when
they shipped with both and gave you the option of booting) and ran the
panther upgrade. Then installed Office and it pulled everything into
Entourage, contacts and email. how did it do that if there is no way to do
it from machine to machine?

Can I pull the old express data into the mail program that comes with OSX
and then transfer to Entourage? or is the simplest method to send all their
emails to a hotmail or yahoo account, install the new machine, then send
back all the email to the new machine.

I've been researching for a couple of days about moving email and contacts

Here's one method:

Outlook Express identities are located in one of these three locations:
Old Computer/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Identities/
Old Computer/Users/<Your User>/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Identities/
/Outlook Express 5 Folder/Identities/

Find where your identity is stored by opening Outlook Express, going to File
Switch Identities, and creating a new identity with a unique name. Then,
in the Finder, go to File > Find and search for the new name you just
created. You'll then find the correct "Identities" folder with your data.

Copy the "Identities" folder to the new machine. Then, open Entourage,
and go to File > Import. Choose to "Import information from a program" and
then choose "Outlook Express 5". You then just need to follow the
instructions. You might be prompted to locate your identity; in that case,
just navigate to the Identities folder you copied over and then locate your
old Outlook Express identity.

It would probably be easier to use the method I mentioned above. Of course,
do remember that you can drag e-mails from Outlook Express to the Desktop to
export them. You should be able to import them into Entourage, though doing
this for a lot of messages could become quite unwieldy.
