Olde Word 97 "system" problem

D

Dave

I have a dual boot NT4/W2k PC. Both Os's have the same Word 97 installed.
However, if I'm running w2k and I try to open a .doc file that was created under
the NT4 boot, I *sometimes* get a message saying "file in use by xyz - do you
wish to make a copy". Not all files get this message - only some.
How I can fix this :)
Thanks

Hi Dave,

There may be some left over lock/temporary files in use if the document store is in a folder accessible through either boot
partition. See if using Start=>Search and recycling files found using the search string of
~$*.*;*.tmp
before starting Word, helps.

Thanks Bob - that did the trick!
Care to explain the reg. expression ~$*.*;*.tmp ? The * and . tmp I understand -
but the ~$; ?
Thanks

ps This expression found 250 files!

Hi Dave,

It's actually not a regular expression, but one looking for specific MS Word temporary file naming conventions. <g> They're part of
the temp file set Word creates and clears up during a 'normal' shutdown of Word, but Word has no capability to clean up after itself
when it shuts down on its own :)
