Older Excel 98 Slowing Down / Revisited

Problem revised:
Saving "editions" (publishing function within a file) has suddenly slowed to
a crawl.

Additional information:

Office 98 running on 500MHZ iMac / OS 8.6
160MB ram / virtual memory turned on
4GB hard drive - 2GB unused
24MB memory allocated to Excel
no new software added before problem arose
no other software running while using Excel
Re-building desktop did not help
relative speed and functionality of other programs not effected

Has no one encountered and already solved this problem?

Hi Russ-

When's the last time the HD was defragmented? Although fragmentation is
something that happens over time, it can appear as "sudden" if a large
portion of that last good-sized chunk of free space gets taken for data
storage. You might also try allocating more RAM to the program, but if
the file size has not increased significantly that probably won't help.
