Doug Alpern

I wrote a business plan about 2 years ago, and now when I try to open it
with Word 2004 it has problems. First it asks what format I want to open it
in (i.e., text, RTF, etc), and then opens a document with all garbage. AND I
CAN'T FIND A VIABLE BACKUP. HELP!!!!

In addition,

Are you double-clicking or using File | Open? If using File | Open, what is
"Enable" set to in the dialog? Your description sounds like you may have it
set to "Recover Text From Any File".

Sorry Doug:

Everyone: I have had a look at Doug's "document".

He's had a fatal Hard Disk Read Error. The content of the thing is not a
Word document, it's random collection of bits of different files: it's
binary soup :)

Cheers
