OLK17, temporary internet files

P

Patriot

My VP has been saving his excel spreadsheets in C:\documents and
settings\user\local settings\temporary internet files\OLK17\*.xls
inadvertantly and now can not browse to the directory to open his excel
files.

I have looked at permissions, hidden files etc.. and can not browse to the
OLK17 directory. He is running MS XP Pro sp1 and Office XP Pro sp2.

This is a system directory. That may be the problem. But I suggest you get the files out of
there! You probably don't want them deleted if he tells IE to clean up the temporary files...

That is what I am trying to do but I can not browse to the directory. Is
there a way to change the default location when saving an excel spreadsheat
sent in an email.

I don't know what your problem could be. I can browse to these directories without problems. Can
you, from the command line, copy the files to another directory, i.e.

Start > Run > Cmd

Then, e.g.

Copy "C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temporary internet files\OLK17\*.xls" <your
destination directory here>

My default location for Save As is MyDocuments, and there's a "places" bar on the left to get to
other directories. Doesn't he have that?

I can not browse to the directory...I have tried several other workstations
and they have the same issue.

Here is how I have the problem. A users emails me an excel spreadsheet> I
open the spreadsheet> then when I do a "Save As">the default location is
c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temporary internet
files\OLK2>I save the file. Then when I want to open the file at a later
time...I can not browse to the directory. I can not open the file anymore.

Don't save the files in that directory in the first place -
save them to another directory.

Sorry, this may be silly, but I hate overlooking the obvious.

Can you see the folder in windows explorer?

XP has an option to "hide protected operating system files". Is that checked
in tools>folder options>view tab?

What happens when you click on the folder in windows explorer?

Is the folder empty? (right click the folder in the folder list and choose
properties)

no, I can not see the folder from explorer.

I have the same problem (but with me--not the VP.)

One way to get to that folder is to use the old windows 3.x Winfile program.

Windows Start Button
Run
Winfile

But since is the old 3.x version, it doesn't support long file names. But it
shouldn't be too hard to find your workbooks. (Kind of a pain, but you can get
there anyway!)

(I know that Winfile still works in win98 and winNT 4.)

Patriot,

Check in Start> Settings> Control Panel> Folder Options. Click the View
tab, look for Files and Folders, subheading Hidden Files and Folders, see if
the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" is checked. It probably should be if
you want to see the files.

HTH,
Steve
