OMG. Please help newbie.

I feel so dumb. I just bought Office Ultimate and have installed it on my
computer, replacing a trial version of Office. The thing is, this is the
first time I've ever bought software, ever. And I have no idea what I'm
doing. I expected there to be a manual or something. I saw that I can get
basic training online. But I have a few other questions just about
installation and software. Please don't laugh - well, okay, laugh...but not
too loud.

1. There are two discs in the package. I put Disc 1 into my computer and
it seems to have completely installed the suite. Soooo....what on earth is
the second disc for?!?!? What do I do with those discs now? What would I
use them for again?

2. I read the licensing agreement and it said that I'm allowed to make one
copy of the software to use to reinstall the program. Uh...why would I need
to do that if I already have the discs? And if it's just a back up thing, in
case the discs get lost or damaged or something, then HOW do I make that copy
of the software? And would I copy both discs? Both disc one that seemed to
have everything on it and the mysterious disc two that already baffles me?

OMG - I'm too young to be this clueless. I feel like my 80 yr. old
mother-in-law. Thanks in advance.

Have you put Disc 2 in your computer and looked to see what is on it? Sounds
like a logical thing to do.

Wouldn't you want to save the discs in a safe place in case you have to
install the program again, or put it on a new computer?

Make backups of the discs in case you lose them, using disc copying
software.

This is the first time I've ever heard of "disc copying software." Is there
a brand or brands that you recommend?

Firstly, if you didnt uninstall the trial version before you installed from
your purchased cd you are going to have problems.
Start Word, click the round Orb Btn (Top left corner)
Click Word Options
Click Resources
In about Office word, what exactly does it say for version & part of which
Office suite?

Disk 2 is for Outlook BCM (Business Contact Manager) only install it if you
intend to use it

The second disk contains BCM (Business Contact Manager ) All MUI files etc

You will need the disks again if you need an install or you are updating Office
Ultimate and so on

Uh oh. No, I didn't uninstall the trial version first. I'm not sure how
neophytes are supposed to know those kinds of things. At any rate, thank you
very much for the information. I think there IS a problem. When I opened
Word just now I got an error message that said, "Office application version
does not match." I used Word yesterday, didn't get that message, and it
seemed to work fine. A difference between yesterday and today is that I did
insert Disc 2 and install the stuff on it - after I saw Tom's reply and
before I saw yours.

When I click on the Orb button and follow your instructions, I see this:
Microsoft Office Word 2007 (12.0.6331.5000) SP1 Microsoft Office Office
(12.0.632.5000) Part of Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007.

Should I uninstall everything - which I don't know how to do yet - and start
over?

The information you gave from Word is correct for your purchased version of
Office.

It maybe that your trial version hasnt actually been installed, is there an
icon on your desktop for Office 2007 Trial?
Or assuming your PC is using Vista, Click the start/Orb Btn (Bottom left of
screen), then select Control Panel, then click Uninstall Programs.
A window will open & after a few secs will populate, look for the MS Office
Trial entry, select it and uninstall.
If after the uninstallation it says restart computer, say no, then look
again in the window for Office Instalation Assistant, select that and
uninstall. After that then restart the PC.

Try Word, see if its OK, allthough you may have to use your Office cd to
repair/Diagnose

I do have an icon on my desktop that says Microsoft Office - 60 Day Trial. I
am using Vista. When I go to Control Panel and click on "Uninstall a
Program" I don't see anything listed that says "Trail Version" as part of the
title. The trial version I was using, incidentally, can on the computer. I
activated it, but didn't personally install it. I don't know if that matters
or not.

I see an "Activation Assistant for the 2007 Microsoft Office suite" that I
could uninstall.

Looking at the dates that things were installed, two stick out. Microsoft
Works and Microsoft Home and Student are listed w/ an install date of 1/11,
which was right after I bought this laptop. Could either of those be the
trial version I activated? Should I uninstall either or both?

MS Home & Student is the trial version, uninstall it.
MS Works is not really needed, since you have the full version of Office, so
it can be uninstalled
A Point to note; If you ever have to recover your Laptop to Factory specs,
it will end up as new, so the trial & Works will be there, so at this point
Uninstall the Trial & Activation assistant from the Add/Remove dialogue
prior to installing any paid for software

I got lost at the "Point to Note." I will uninstall Home and Student and
Works. I understand that IF I ever have to restore the laptop to factory
specs, Works and the trial would reappear. (Let's hope to God I never have
to do that.) But I lost you after that. I'm unsure on 3 points:

1. Is the "Trial and Activation Assistant" the same thing as the
"Activation Assistant for the 2007 Microsoft Office suite" that I saw?
That's the only activation assistant I saw in the list of programs.

2. I don't remember seeing an "Add/Remove Dialog" thing. I don't know what
that is or what it means.

3. You said that I should uninstall the activation ass't prior to
installing any paid for software - but I already installed the paid-for
version of Office.

I'm sorry...I warned you that I was clueless. :-( Thanks for your patience.

impact on retail version software

2) Add/Remove dialogue is accessed via Control Panel and is listed as
'Uninstall Programs'
