Omit calls to Installation CD for security enhancements

If somebody is running a bootleg copy of Office, they are not going to
download security updates. If they do, they are already smart enough to have
know how to avoid your security. Why bother all the legitimate users by
asking for the installation CD when installing a security upgrade? It is
like asking everybody to register their guns so as to take them away from
criminals. The criminals won't register them.

Hi, Bill,

This may explain why the CD is required in some cases:

You don't mention which version of Office you're running, and there is an
Office 2000 version of that article available, as well.

Like it or not, I think it's a good explanation of the rationale, which does
not appear to be anti-piracy.

The LIS in Office 2003 was devised as a way to eliminate the installation CD

840169 - Full-file version update may request Office source files:

It has some limitations, such as...it doesn't install if you don't have
enough hard drive space.

Hope that information is helpful.
