Omitting line returns after pasting from PDF column, HOW?

S

stephanie

I frequently copy text out of browser windows or PDFs and paste it in
word. The problem is that this pasted text is often in a shorter
column than the with of my page, so I have to click on the beginning
of each line, hit delet so it is brought up to the end of the previosu
line, then insert a space, I would think there would be an automated
way to do this, right?

In addition to Bob's post and expanding a bit on Suzanne & Dave's
article, which is a little un-Mac-ish, I'd suggest a couple of things
you might try in the find and replace department.

If you have many paragraphs, first replace the genuine paragraph ends
with a placeholder. Genuine para ends often show up as two para marks
together, so.. find ^p^p replace /\.
Then change all the remaining ^p to space. Then change all multiple
space to one space e.g. find ^w (that's space ^w which finds all
whitespace that follows a space) replace: (space)
Finally, change the /\ placeholders back to ^p.

That is so useful, it is worth recording as a macro.
You might embellish it with magic to detect spaces before para marks
and fix a few other things that are often not perfect, like replacing
straight quotes with curly ones. If you are not too hot at writing
macros, this kind of job is perfect for creating them using 'record
macro'
I've never seen any of these marks before in my documents. I just have
a paragraph mark (backward-looking P) at the end of each line.

Don't even know where to begin with your suggestions. Where do these
^p^p things show? And what's the upside-down V thing?

Not a programmer, just a writer. Can you help?

Hi Stephen:

Yes, he already did help. He sent you to a web address. The instructions
for doing what you need are described there.

I guess this is one time a "writer" needs to turn into a "reader".

Sorry: We get a little frustrated when you tell us "none of this stuff
works" -- when it's something we know works because we've been using it
daily for ten years.

If it's not working for you, you need to go back and carefully follow the
steps at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/CleanWebText.htm.

Cheers

Unless you're also "Stephanie" it's no wonder this didn't work for you -
Your circumstances are completely different from hers. That's what happens
when you hijack a thread... Especially one from a week back.

Clive has provided an appropriate solution - closely akin to what Elliott
suggested here - to your other post. You might do well to review this
information on using the newsgroups:
