ON 2003 to 2007 beta issues

I tried the 2007 public beta and I liked it except for the killer for me -
that the files only get converted one way from 2003 to 2007 - will that be
the same for the real 2007? That would be a killer for me. Also I didn't
understand the backgrounds, is that the same as 2003, if they are white I
can't use it either, I have visual issues which are solved really well with
the grey background. Also is there a read only option - like abode reader -
so my lecturers can read my work and I can read it on the computers at uni
but carry the read only prog on my 1GB thumb drive? thanks, just wondering.

Hi Belle,

Yes, the conversion from 2003 to 2007 is one-way and this will be the
same with the final release. Why is that a killer for you?
To see how you can configure OneNote to better work with your visual
issues, I'd recommend checking out this page:
http://www.iprimus.ca/~martha/new-technology.htm
If that doesn't help you, let me know and I'll ping the author of the
page (Karen McCall). I'm sure she'll pretty fast post a reply here :)
If you still have OneNote 2007, then you can use File, Publish as PDF or
XPS to create PDF files out of your OneNote pages. Those would fit your
read-only needs. As for their being a version of OneNote you can just
take with you, there is none, but it sounds like a great idea :)

I can tell you it would be a killer for anyone who wants to share files
with someone who still has ON 2003. I understand that ON 2007 must have a
different file format to do all the extra stuff it is doing but
incompatible new formats will always cause a hardship for anyone who
needs to share files with people with older versions who don't want to
upgrade.

Perhaps an inexpensive upgrade path would encourage more users to
upgrade, therefore leaving fewer users with incompatibility complaints.

I fully understand that issue, but the OP's post didn't suggest that. It
sounded more like she was using ON for herself without sharing things
with other users directly.

$99 is not that much to upgrade, especially when you consider that
students might be able to get ON for free from their universities. Mine
e.g. was handing out OneNote 2003 CDs like nothing to students (I was
able to pick up more than one e.g.).

Thanks,

1/ Grant, I agree that an inexpensive upgrade path would be good! My friends
will probably upgrade.

2/ Patrick, thanks for the comments. I'm going to reinstall the beta and
make sure it is in a different place to 2003. It may sound funny but it was
'a killer' for me for the visual reasons (the layout), and then with 2007
changing my uni notes... well... When I put the beta back on, I'll put those
comments here re the visuals, so you can use them if they help! BTW pdf print
would be great, but I already do that with something called 'PDFill', which
is free, for all my programs. And I'll check out Karen's page. Thanks! Belle.

Yes, please post your comments about the visuals here. If those visual
issues make OneNote less accessible to you, then Microsoft definitely
needs and wants to know about them. MS is determined to make Office 2007
the most accessible version of Office ever.
