ON 2007 & WDS 3.0 Warning

G

Gordon Staley

I have upgraded to ON 2007 and have installed WDS 3.0. Every time I start up
ON I get the following warning:
---- beginning of warning text
OneNote cannot index notes for fast searching because the Windows Search
service is currently stopped or disabled.

You can manually start the Windows Search service in Administrative Tools in
the Windows Control Panel or contact your system administrator to start the
service for you.
---- end of warning text

When I go to the Administrative Tools and look at Windows Search in the
Services list it shows as Started. WindowsSearch.exe is running in the Task
Manager. When I look at the WDS Indexing Status it show that over 59K files
have been indexed and that there are no items left to scan.

When I use WDS to look for something I know to be in ON, it shows up just
fine. When I do the same search in ON it does not use WDS, but rather does a
real-time search through ON.

Any suggestions on how to get ON to use WDS?

1. Make sure you have a WDS builld with this version#: 03.00.5824.280
To check your version#:
Go ro Run, type in "regedit" and enter
check this registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search
Make sure:
CurrentVersion = 03.00.5824.280
SetupCompletedSuccessfully = 0x00000001
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\ProtocolHandlers
OneIndex = Search.OneIndexHandler.1

2. If not,
uninstall WDS
restart your machine,
open OneNote
OneNote should detect that WDS has been uninstalled
Select option to install WDS when prompted
Reinstalling the latest version of WDS should fix this problem.

3. If this doesn't work, then:
What OS are you using?
Is it 32 bit or 64bit?
Are there any uniqunesses to your environment?

When I ran regedit my settings exactly matched the ones you outlined.

I am running Windows Tablet PC Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600.

I'm not aware of any uniqunesses to my environment. I have a 100 GB HD with
about 35 GB used and 2 GB of RAM. Let me know if there is any other
information that would help.

Here is the info from System Information about the Windows Search Service:
Windows Search WSearch Running Auto Own
Process c:\windows\system32\searchindexer.exe /embedding Normal LocalSystem 0

Is the WDS service configured to start "Automatically" (not "manual'')? To
check, go back to the Services window, double click on the WDS service,
and make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Thanks for the tip. It is set to start automatically. In fact I'm impressed
with how quickly it indexes changes to ON, new email and edited documents.
I only wish I could get this glitch within ON figured out.
