ON 2010 on top of Office 2007

Is it okay to install just Onenote 2010 while running Office 2007? I only
want to try the features in Onenote at this time.

Does the interfunctionality (notably with Outlook and IE) still work?

Thank you for assistance,

Yes. When installing choose "customized" and deselect the rest of
Office.

You can leave ON2007 on the machine. Both versions can co-exist,

Yes. It works even better than before as now there's a dialog for
specifying the destination for appointments and contacts.

You can use the notebooks in the 2007 format - even side by side with
ON2007 on the same machine as well as shared.
Or you can convert the notebooks to the format which offers quite some
fine new features. One can also convert backward to the 2007 format.
