On Launch Excel 2008 opens all .xls files on my hard drive

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

When I launch excel 2008 dozens of windows start popping up. It is opening every spreadsheet saved on my hard drive. I need to wait for it to open them all, and then I have to close them one by one.

This is a brand new mac with a brand new installation of Office 2008. I've tried reinstalling but it doesn't help.

Anybody experience this issue?

Thanks,

Jason

First thing to check: Go to Excel> Preferences> General & take a look at the
field labeled "At startup, open all files in:" - It sounds like you've set
that to your HD location or some other folder which contains the files.

Clear the content of that field (or change it to something more practical) &
you should be OK. Otherwise post back for other less likely possibilities.

I have the same problem except that on opening Excel all files in my Documents folder open including Word and Excel. This goes on until a message pops up saying Excel has to close. If the suggested solution works I cant use it because Excel never gets all the way open before it craters.

Try starting XL with the shift key down. Change the preferences, then
close and reopen XL.
