On opening Word requests virus scan

With Word 2000 the act of opening causes a message to appear in the bottom
left part of the window which says "Requesting virus scan........." and the
loading process is extended by what seems like minutes but is in fact only
many seconds.
This occurs even although it is a new document that is being opened (How
does it scan nothing for a virus..?).
I run regular virus checks with Norton and the like so I know there is no
virus to find.

How do I turn this nuisance off ??

This is a function of your anti-virus software - with Norton AV for example,
turn off the Office Plug-in option.
