ON over a LAN

F

frateg8r

I have ON 2003 (trial) installed on my WinXP/SP2 desktop with a full Office
2003 installation, and have moved the "My Notebook" folder from My Documents
to c:\NOTEBOOK.

I have downloaded the trial copy on to my laptop, also XP/SP2, but with only
a partial Office 2000 installation (it has been brought up to date.)

I have been unable to access my notebook (c:\NOTEBOOK) as either a shared
network folder or a mapped network drive from my laptop.

Is this a limitation imposed in the trial period? Is it because I do not
have the full Office 2000 installation on the laptop? Is it because I do not
have Office 2003 on the laptop?

In the future, next 12 mos. or so, I do intend to purchase a Tablet PC,
which will have Office 2003 or later, but if I am unable to access the
notebook over my LAN then I think this product will ultimately fail to meet
my needs.

Any comments from anyone with experience using ON over a LAN would be
greatly appreciated. I am also wondering if the purchased licensing allows
for an install on a desktop as well as a laptop (in the fashion FrontPage
2003 does...).

Thanks

You're trying to access the desktop copies of the notes (C:\Notebook
refers to the desktop?) from the laptop?

If you move the My Notebook folder from its default location you must use
Tools | Options | Open and Save to update the path.

The limitation is because you've placed it on the root drive. Move it into
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users or some other folder under My Documents,
and you should be able to do what you want. Also, having the folder outside
the My Documents structure is subjecting it to possible "replacement" if you
use a Restore Point in System Restore at some time to correct a problem.
System Restore keeps track of all files on the C:\ drive, except those under
the My Documents structure.

Responding to both Chris & Erika:

Erika: C\Notebook refers not to the desktop, but the main (or root)
directory; I have updated (I should say, attempted to update) the Open/Save
path in ON with no success: mostly ON wants some sort of folder name that
does not exist, and will not accept any that I browse for outside of the My
Documents directory [the important point to understand is that I am referring
to attempts to change the path on the ON installation on the laptop! This
path works fine on the desktop!]. I tried the Shared Documents directory, but
was only able to open one section. The remaining sections and folders showed
that I did not have permission, or that the file did not exist.

Chris: I'm afraid I don't understand why placing it in the root directory is
problematic; I do that with many of programs (Excel, Paperport, for example).
I've tried doing this in shared folders, and it can't be done under My
Documents because those files cannot be accessed over a LAN [however, it
occurs to me that because I am not using the same access credentials from one
computer to the other that this could be part of the problem? I don't know
much about network configuration...this is not a server based LAN, just my
desktop and my laptop]. Finally, I do not utilize the system restore feature,
so this is not a concern for me.

Thank you both for your quick responses; kindly give consideration to the
additional information I've left now and let me know if you can think of
anything else that might help me resolve this quandary.

Problematic because use of System Restore will revert those messages back to
whatever was there at the time of the last check. Place the folder under
All Users, and it can be shared and will still be protected by the My
Documents structure.

Note there is a difference when you open Windows Explorer (it normally opens
to YOUR My Documents. Now expand the C:\ drive and look for Documents and
Settings (what I called the My Documents structure) which is where all the
My Documents settings are stored. What you see in the initial instance
belongs to you, the Documents and Settings folder contains all the various
account My Documents. And that is where it can be shared.

First, as I say, I am not concerned about System Restore - I do not and will
not use it; I have adequate backup protection in place.

Second, your solution has been only partially successfull: I can now open My
Notebook from the laptop, but read-only. Without being able to edit, it is
still effectively dead.

Any further ideas?

Guess I'm not understanding exactly what you're wanting to do. IF you're
not password protecting the notebook, IF you're sharing it properly, and IF
you're using OneNote on the second machine, it should just work.

Maybe that's the problem. The MVPs you see posting in this newsgroup are
all volunteers who have supported fellow users over the years. What we do
is on our own time, we don't work for Microsoft, and we receive no
compensation for giving our peer support.

Now I see you're trying to move the notebook to another system instead of
sharing it. I'd suggest you look at Microsoft's free SyncToy (just recently
revised):

If you don't want to manually transfer files/folders on your LAN, this
little gem will do it for you.
