When I start Excel, it tries to open every file in Documents, gives me hundreds of error messages reading "cannot open any more documents", and then crashes. What can I do?

Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I cannot even open Excel because it tries to open so many files. Is there a way to open Excel in a kind-of "safe mode" or erase this preference without opening Excel?
