One Fix For Failing Office Updates

If you have been having problems applying Office 2003 Updates with a failure
1604 and you have recently changed the letter of or removed a hard drive,
this could be the solution you are looking for.

Open Regedit and find the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE]SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Delivery\{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}\LocalCacheDrive

If the value of 'LocalCacheDrive' is set to the letter corresponding to the
missing hard drive, or to a removable media drive (floppy, CD, DVD, etc),
change the value to C. If there is more than one instance of
91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9 under Delivery, repeat the procedure for
each one (the additional instances will be there if you have additional
Office 11 products installed such as Visio, Front Page, etc.).

When finished you should be able to install any missing updates to your
Office Installation(s). Do note that you will be asked to insert the original
CD or DVD media since the cache cannot be found.

Suggestion to Microsoft Office Developers: Why can asking for the CD/DVD
media not be the default behaviour if the cache drive is not found or is
found to be a removable media drive? Or if the cache is found to be
unavailable for whatever reason?

After removing a failing secondary hard drive, my Office Updates failed to
function. Using the OHotFix logs, and a fine toothed comb ;), I was able to
come up with this solution.

Hope it helps someone else.

I am not an Office Developer - why should I?
