one more security question

Our employees will need to log onto project server and update thier tasks.
Our HR person will create a new resource via resource center and allow them
to log on. My question is; is there any need to manually add them to the
team members group and assign the team members to the my tasks cat or will
they be able to accept team tasks and update progress on them without being
entered into a security group? I am trying to avoid having to have an HR
clerk have access to security groups.

They will need to have the right permissions to access PWA which is usually
granted through the Team Member group. You *could* assign permissions to
the individuals, but that is setting yourself up for an administrative nightmare.

You may be better off with AD synch, which will automatically drop them into
the Team Member group.

Andrew is quite right, it would be difficult to set-up and difficult to
troubleshoot and open for all sorts of manual entry erros, if you do
permissions on the user level. Having said that not only could you use AD
group to set the Team Members permissions in Project Server, but as well look
in to using the same (or something on that line) group for resource sync as
well (would help HR person I guess to some extent). Its under 'Server
Settings'->'Active Directory Resource Pool Synchronization '. Look in to
creating a custom view in global template for them to edit resource data and
then they can really speed things up.. Or even 'worse', go real crazy and
make a macro button that verifies and populates default resource values (e.g.
cost p/h, overtime, job/role type etc).

Now, back to your question, one good reason why you would want to add
resource/user to the security group is so that Project Server can replicate
their permissions on to the project workspace!! If they do not belong to at
least team members then they wont have access to edit/add issues or risks etc

BikerJohn:

When you setup a resource through PWA, and select the checkbox for the
resource can be assigned to tasks, the system automatically adds them to the
Team Members group. You must assign any other group membership manually.
