One Note 2007 Won't Keep Formatting in Paste

Hi,

When I paste from various applications into One Note 2007 (part of Office
Ultimate 2007), the text formatting is often stripped out in the process,
even though I specify to "Keep Source Formatting." If I use Word as an
intermediate host, then the formatting remains as it should be (i.e. copy
first to Word, then copy and paste from Word to One Note). This is
definitely a problem specific to One Note, since the same text copies
flawlessly to other applications.

Is there a workaround or patch to fix this irritating problem? I shouldn't
have to use a third application to simply do what One Note is supposed to do
natively.

It depends on from which application you are copying and what they put on
the clipboard. For example Visual Studio puts rich text on the clipboard
and OneNote doesn’t support rich text on the clipboard so when you paste VS
copied content into OneNote the formatting is lost as it is pasted as plain
text.

Now if you pasted that VS content into Word and then copied from Word then
Word puts HTML on the clipboard which OneNote accepts and then you get the
formatting.

It is something we would like to fix in a future version but there is no
path at this point. Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the response Daniel, although I'm still a bit perplexed about
some of the limitations you describe.

For example, if I paste directly from a Word document into OneNote, most of
the formatting remains (such as bold, italic, and highlighting), but other
critical formatting elements are lost, such as tabbed formatting of lists.
Manually cleaning up a long tabbed list is a chore that I should not have to
do in a truly integrated software suite. I would expect much better
integration between Word and OneNote.

Given that the copy/paste function is the primary portal for data flow into
OneNote, I would politely suggest that Microsoft fumbled in a big way, and
significantly diminished the value of an otherwise excellent piece of
software for managing large amounts of data (a task which occupies much of my
time).

Do you know if this problem is being addressed in the 2010 beta?

I had a similar problem for a long time, and while I'm not sure why it does
this, I do have a solution. At the very top of the data you wish to copy,
insert a bullet and type a line of text that is unformatted (i.e. no bold,
italics, etc).

For me, if I copied something that started off with a bold or italicized
heading/title, after pasting the text the entire body became bold or italics.
By inserting a bullet and line of normal text above the formatted heading,
the problem went away.

The solution that works well for me is:

In MS Word
-> File -> Web Page Preview

Then copy and paste from your web browswer!
