one user, multiple colors in track changes

Hello-
I'm sitting here at my computer, and my computer is suddenly switching
the track changes color on me. (its set to "automatic.") I started on
blue, and when i put the cursor on the changes, i can see that its
attributed to me/my computer. Suddenly it will switch colors, and when
i put the cursor on it, its attributed to "unknown." i didn't restart
my computer or shut down word or anything...it just shifted colors.
I"m working in footnotes, and it seems to sometimes be triggered when
i'm typing and then delete something in the footnotes....sometimes the
deletion will go back to the original blue. whats going on here?

I forgot to add that it also seems to be triggered when i try to type a
quotation mark; when i do so with track changes on, it creates an
apostrophe and quotation mark together, as well as triggering the color
change (although the color change only occurs in the footnotes, the
apostrophe problem happens in the text as well). it looks like a bunch
of colorblind drunk monkeys is using my keyboard!

Does the reviewer name change when the color changes? Or is it Œjust¹ the
color change? What version of Word are you using?

By default the track changes color preference is ŒBy Author¹, meaning, each
reviewer of a document will have their own unique color for the changes
(deletions, insertions) made to the document. This also means when a
document is opened on a different computer, the reviewer colors could be
different.

I have a similar problem. When I am changing a word (for example,
changing "Word" to "word"), the deletion (the capital W) shows as
having been made by "Trial User" but the addition (the lower case w)
shows as having been made by me.

Unfortunately, in my case, this is a critical issue. Changing all the
"Trial User"s through Tools>Track Changes>Accept or Reject Changes is
time-consuming and frustrating.

Any ideas?

Coupla things to check:

1) Has the document been anywhere near a PC, or Word 2004?

2) If so, has anyone edited it with the "Remove personal information from
file on save" setting checked? If so, all of your tracked changes will be
labelled "Unknown" because Word removed the user names from the document.

3) Has the document been edited on a machine to which you do not have to
log on? If so, the user name for tracked changes is likely to be set to
something cryptic suchg as "Network user".

Tracked Changes is not "that" buggy in the latest versions of Word, although
Matt is quite correct, earlier versions were a bit of a lottery. Things
that will affect it are:

Fast Saves, Versions, Comments, ables, multiple sets of revisions, compare
documents, AutoFormat while you type, and Remove personal information. Look
all of these things up in the help, and make sure you understand the
implications if you decide to use any of them.
